News Sources

KTVZ television's web site is an impressive source of local news (superior to the broadcasts in many significant ways), including source documents for many stories and Associated Press feeds. It runs toward blood and gore, and is moving more that direction as of late. Comments sections are deadly rude.

The Bulletin remains the largest and most credible news organization in Central Oregon, although it's shrinking by the minute. Despite a sad turnover rate, many of its journalists do excellent work -- particularly when turned loose on major projects or kept on the same beat for more than a year. Web site is cumbersome to the point of uselessness. Buy a hard copy.

The Source, has thrown out bits and pieces of alternative news and an entertainment section second to none since 1996. Blogs are still entertaining.

The Oregonian occasionally has Central Oregon news (some of it very good), but shrinking coverage is sporadic outside of Portland.

KLCC is the regional NPR affiliate based in Eugene; I'm its Central Oregon correspondent. The Northwest Passage airs at 4 p.m. weekdays.

State & Region

The Oregonian covers Portland and state government very well. Commentary pages offer a fine mix, including columnists who sometimes shine very brightly. Editorials tend to run a bit soft -- but not always so, as seen in the 2005 Pulitzer. The web site is virtually un-navigable unless you enjoy pain; it's much easier to kill trees and read the hard copy.

At times, the Eugene Register Guard is brilliant, and among the best medium circulation papers around. It also has a clear and easy link to "Northwest Now," the regional AP feed updated hourly.
